Itinerary
Your birding day begins with an early pick-up from your Cusco hotel. A scenic 40-minute drive takes us to the Huacarpay Wetlands, located in the southern part of the Cusco Valley. The area’s lagoons and reed beds provide perfect conditions for a variety of endemic and migratory species.
At Huacarpay, we’ll look for the Rusty-fronted Canastero, the Bearded Mountaineer, and the colorful Many-colored Rush-Tyrant. Depending on the season, you may also spot boreal migrants and waders resting along the shores. Other frequently observed species include the Sparkling Violetear, Plumbeous Rail, Andean Lapwing, Yellow-winged Blackbird, Andean Negrito, and a wonderful variety of high-Andean waterfowl such as Puna Teal, Cinnamon Teal, Yellow-billed Pintail, Andean Duck, and White-tufted Grebe. Keep your eyes on the skies for Aplomado Falcons, Cinereous Harriers, and Black-chested Buzzard-Eagles soaring above the wetlands.
After an exciting morning of birding, we continue to our second hotspot – San Salvador, located between 12,700 and 13,700 feet on the way to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The landscape transitions into open high-Andean plains and shimmering lagoons, home to species not found at Huacarpay, including the Giant Coot, Andean Goose, Crested Duck, Silvery Grebe, and the elusive White-capped Dipper.
We’ll enjoy a picnic-style lunch surrounded by spectacular mountain views as we search for Shining Sunbeams, Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finches, Tit-like Dacnis, Rufous-webbed Bush-Tyrants, and Slender-billed Miners. With luck, you might also observe the Andean Hillstar and the Cordillera Canastero – true treasures for passionate birders.
