Itinerary
Day 1: The High Andes & The Elfin Forest Gateway
We depart Cusco early to catch the morning activity at Huacarpay Lake, a vital wetland for high-Andean specialties. After a field breakfast, we climb to the Acjanaco Pass (3,500m), the official entrance to Manu National Park, where the stunted trees of the Elfin Forest provide a dramatic backdrop for treeline specialists.
Target Species: Bearded Mountaineer (Endemic), Many-colored Rush-Tyrant, Plumbeous Rail, Puna Teal, Giant Hummingbird, and the Scribble-tailed Canastero.
Day 2: The Temperate Cloud Forest & Mixed Flocks
We spend the morning birding the pristine temperate forests of the Wayqecha area. As we descend the Manu Road, the vegetation grows taller and the bird flocks grow larger. This is the realm of the “Mountain-Toucans” and some of the most beautiful tanagers in Peru.
Target Species: Gray-breasted Mountain-Toucan, Red-and-white Antpitta (Endemic), Golden-collared Tanager, Grass-green Tanager, Marcapata Spinetail, and the Scaly-naped Parrot.
Day 3: The National Bird & Foothill Treasures
At dawn, we visit a private Lek (display site) to witness the world-famous Andean Cock-of-the-Rock. The rest of the day is spent exploring the lush subtropical forests around our lodge, where the heat of the Amazon begins to meet the cool air of the mountains.
Target Species: Andean Cock-of-the-Rock (Displaying males), Golden-headed Quetzal, Highland Motmot, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Versicolored Barbet, and the Ornate Antwren.
Day 4: Tropical Hummingbirds & The Scenic Ascent
Our final morning focuses on the lower reaches of the road and the flowering gardens of the lodge, which are a magnet for hummingbirds. We then begin our private drive back up the Andes toward Cusco, making strategic stops to find any species missed on the descent.
Target Species: Wire-crested Thorntail, Rufous-crested Coquette, Blue-banded Toucanet, Green Jay, and the Paradise Tanager.

Packing List: Preparing for the Manu Road
The Manu Road spans altitudes from 3,500m (11,500 ft) down to 500m (1,600 ft). You will experience everything from chilly Andean winds to humid tropical heat. Layers are the secret to comfort.
Essential Clothing
Lightweight, Quick-Dry Clothing: Synthetic or merino wool blends are best. Avoid heavy cotton, which stays wet in the humidity.
Long-Sleeved Shirts & Trousers: Essential for protection against sun and insects (sandflies in the lower elevations).
Insulating Layer: A fleece or light down jacket for the cold mornings in the high Andes and Wayqecha.
Rain Gear: A high-quality waterproof jacket or a sturdy poncho. The cloud forest lives up to its name!

Frequently Asked Questions: Birding Manu Road
1. What is the best time of year for birding on the Manu Road?
The peak birding season is during the dry season (May to November). During these months, the roads are safer, and visibility in the cloud forest is much better. However, many birders also enjoy the “shoulder” months of April and December when mixed-species flocks are highly active.
2. How difficult is the terrain on this 4-day tour?
This tour is rated as Easy to Moderate. Most of our birding is done along the Manu Road itself or on well-maintained lodge trails. While we are in a mountainous region, your private vehicle is always nearby, and we move at a “birder’s pace” to ensure everyone gets a clear view and photographers can set up their shots.
3. Do I need a yellow fever vaccination for this trip?
Since this 4-day itinerary stays primarily in the Cloud Forest and Foothills (and does not go deep into the lowland Amazon basin), the risk is lower. However, we always recommend consulting your doctor or a travel clinic regarding Yellow Fever and Malaria precautions before traveling to any tropical region in Peru.
4. What kind of camera gear should I bring?
For wildlife photographers, we recommend a telephoto lens (300mm to 600mm). The light in the cloud forest can be low, so lenses with a wide aperture (f/4 or f/2.8) are ideal. A sturdy tripod or monopod is highly recommended for the Cock-of-the-Rock lek where light levels are dim.
5. Is there electricity and Wi-Fi at the lodges?
Expect a “digital detox!” Most lodges on the Manu Road operate on solar power or generators. You will have a few hours each evening to charge camera batteries and phones. Wi-Fi is extremely limited or non-existent, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the sounds of the forest.
6. Can this tour be combined with Machu Picchu?
Absolutely! Many of our guests use this 4-day Manu Road trip as a “nature extension” before or after visiting Machu Picchu or the Sacred Valley. Since we start and end in Cusco, the logistics are seamless.
