Walking distances are generally short. However, the night quest for the Long-whiskered Owlet on Day 2 requires walking on uneven, muddy forest trails in the dark. A basic level of mobility and stability is recommended.
What are the photography setups like at the lodges?
The lodges along this route (Waqanki, Owlet Lodge, and specialized stops in the Utcubamba Valley) are global capitals for bird photography. They feature beautifully maintained nectar and fruit feeders that draw birds to within a few feet of the viewing areas.

What is the altitude on this tour? Will I get altitude sickness?
Unlike Southern Peru routes (like Cusco or Abra Malaga), the Northern Route is much lower and rarely causes altitude sickness (soroche). The highest point on this itinerary is the Abra Patricia Pass at roughly 2,300 meters (7,545 feet). Most travelers do not require altitude medication for this trip, but we always recommend consulting your doctor before any international travel.
